The Big picture
Solo Exhibition
by Colton Teri
1811 14th St NW DC
Opened July 9th-18th
My name is Colton Teri, I am an artist from Maryland. I graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art in May of 2020. The production of this exhibition has been an amazing experiment for myself, a snowball effect of choices and manifestations. One leading to another has lead this body of work into fruition.
The Big Picture includes an accumulation of objects and symbols, dissected and transformed, representing my interests. An exploration into design aesthetics found in federally issued mandates such as ration stamps and national seals from WWII. Working with this iconography, my sculptures undertake notions of national collectivity, a distant unconnected feeling. However through this process, I feel more connected to my grandmother Julia whom I never met, who arrived in the US during the 1940s. A triangle of conflict between the connected, unconnected and aesthetic.
Producing art exhibitions is my medium as much as the sculptures themselves. Having control over a space, creating my own standard, has allowed me to overcome what I believe was possible for myself. I look forward to expanding my process, through my own body of work as well as through the collaboration with others. Thank you for coming and I hope you enjoy the exhibition.
Best,
Colton Teri
